Paradigm Shifts in the Care of Patients With Osteoporosis
Exploring revolutionary approaches and evolving treatment strategies in osteoporosis management.
Thorigram addresses recent (2020-2023) North American guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis in adults aged 50 and older. It covers key clinical questions related to identifying at-risk patients, diagnosis, risk stratification, treatment initiation, and monitoring. The slides also highlight the high risk of subsequent fractures within 1-2 years after an initial fracture, emphasizing the concept of "imminent" fracture risk. Data on survival rates after fractures and fracture risk calculation tools (like FRAX) are also presented. The focus is on a population approach to fracture prevention.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this program, participants will be able to:
- Identify key risk factors and clinical scenariosthat warrant osteoporosis screening and diagnosis in adults ≥50.
- Summarize recent guideline recommendationsfor diagnosing and managing osteoporosis.
- Understand the concept of "imminent risk"of subsequent fractures after an initial osteoporotic fracture.
- Recognize the impact of fractureson survival rates.
- Be familiar with risk stratificationfor osteoporosis management.
- Be familiar with treatment initiation and monitoringfor patients with osteoporosis.
